Brownfields Assesments and Cleanup

A Brownfield is a property where the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse is complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant.  It is estimated there are more than 450,000 brownfields sites in the United States.  Cleaning up and reinvesting in these properties increases local tax bases, facilitates job growth, utilizes existing infrastructure, takes development pressures off undeveloped and open land, and both improves and protects the environment. Underutilized brownfields properties located within our client’s communities present unique challenges, but also present significant opportunity.  Credere’s Brownfields Programs not only address contaminated properties, it helps stimulate economic and community development, and increase greenspace.

Through our completion of over 120 EPA-funded Brownfields Assessments and Cleanups, Credere’s redevelopment-based approach successfully helps developers, municipalities, and planning commissions transition projects beyond the assessment phase of Brownfields and into actual cleanup and redevelopment.  Brownfields projects that Credere is/was involved in are leveraging over $200 million in private investment and over $75 million in other public funding.

Through our Brownfields experience Credere has completed:

  • all required U.S. EPA reporting;
  • implemented a community outreach program to educate the public;
  • completed a thorough inventory of Brownfields sites in the program area;
  • developed a site nomination mechanism and site selection criteria unique to the needs of each individual region;
  • completed U.S. EPA-funded Phase I and/or Phase II Investigations on over 120 sites in Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Vermont;
  • completed required cleanup planning and pilot studies on a large portion of those assessed; and,
  • implemented site-specific and area-wide reuse planning on select sites.

Thus, Credere maintains a thorough understanding of the Brownfields process, is familiar with the technical approach and methods that have contributed to successful projects in New England, and knows how to apply this knowledge and expertise to your specific Brownfields Assessment Program or Brownfields Cleanup project.
